1. Brand Reputation

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo has been around since 2003 and has built a reputation as one of the best dog food brands in the industry.

Their main focus is on producing high-quality dog foods that are made from natural ingredients, without any artificial preservatives or colors.

They also offer a range of treats and other products for your dog’s health and happiness.

Over the years, the brand has picked up a number of awards that signifies the industry’s trust in them, including the Dog Food Advisor’s Award for Best Dry Dog Food Brand, Best Dog Food with Grain, as well as Best Senior Dog Food as recent as 2022.

Fromm

In the dog food world, there are many big-name brands that have been around for decades.

Fromm is one of these brands, having been around for over 70 years, and its reputation is as solid as ever.

They’ve been making top-quality dog food for over 70 years including basic kibble to raw foods, but their most popular product line is their grain-free formulas.

Fromm’s belief in holistic nutrition is what sets them apart from other brands.

They believe that dogs are more than just animals—they’re family members who deserve to eat the best possible food.

Their ingredients are carefully selected from farms across the country and then combined into recipes that not only taste great but help your pup develop into a healthy adult dog.

It’s no wonder they’ve won awards for both their raw and cooked products!

2. Ingredients

⚠️ A few points to note about the product label

Product name – tells you the percentage of the main ingredient

  • “Chicken” – at least 70% of the product.
  • “Chicken entree”, “Chicken platter”, “Chicken dinner” – at least 10% of the product.
  • “With chicken” – at least 3% of the product
  • “Chicken flavor” – less than 3% of the product

Ingredients – The first few items listed are the most important and make up the majority of the product (determined by weight).

Meat-meal – Can have much more protein than actual meat. To further understand, refer to this guide by AAFCO.

Blue Buffalo

There is a wide range of ingredients being used in Blue Buffalo’s products, so we will simply discuss the main ones here.

All of Blue Buffalo’s dog food starts with the use of real meat, which is the foundation of the BLUE Life Protection Formula.

It also includes healthful whole grains, garden vegetables, and fruit to support your puppy’s healthy growth and development.

The best natural ingredients are used in this recipe, which is also fortified with vitamins, minerals, and other elements including DHA for cognitive development.

Fromm

Likewise, Fromm utilizes a huge variety of healthy ingredients in the production of their dog food range.

As you take a closer look at the finer details, you will notice the use of red meat recipes without grains for adult dogs who are typically active.

These often make use of a delectable combination of lamb, hog, and beef. Frequently, probiotics are added to improve digestion.

The company also uses fresh fruits and vegetables to create its recipes.

To ensure your pet gets all the nutrients he or she needs, these products contain vitamins A, D3, E, B12, and zinc, in addition to Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids for a healthy coat and skin condition.

3. Key Nutrients

AAFCO mandates that a guaranteed analysis of the nutrients must be present on every pet food label.

The analysis must validate minimum crude protein and crude fat percentages as well as maximum crude fiber and moisture percentages.

Understanding your dog’s daily nutritional demands will help you choose the proper food.

Crude Protein

Protein is important to a dog diet because it provides the amino acids and essential fatty acids that help promote muscle growth, repair, and maintenance.

Protein also helps to build strong bones and connective tissue.

In our research, we found that the dry dog food formula from both companies provides almost the same amount of crude protein and the difference is negligible.

When it comes to the wet food version, both brands measure up similarly too.

Crude Fat

Fat is important to a dog’s diet because it provides energy.

Dogs need fat in their meals to keep them from feeling tired and hungry all the time.

A low-fat diet can also lead to skin issues and hair loss, so it’s best to avoid feeding your dog a low-fat diet unless under medical supervision.

In this comparison, you can see that both companies have the percentage of crude fat in about the same healthy amount, both for the dry food version as well as the wet one.

Crude Fiber

Fiber is important to the diet of dogs because it helps them maintain a healthy digestive system.

The fiber in their food helps to keep the pH levels in balance, which prevents constipation and other related problems.

It also helps to move food through the digestive tract slowly, which assists with nutrient absorption.

Both types of food by Blue Buffalo and Fromm provide sufficient fiber for your dog’s needs.

4. Range of formulas

As well-established brands in the industry, both companies have the full range of dog food products for puppies that are growing all the way to senior dogs.

5. Product Safety and Recall

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo has had a few recalls over the last decade or so, with the most recent one being in 2017.

Due to the possibility of high levels of naturally occurring beef thyroid hormones in one production lot of BLUE Wilderness® Rocky Mountain RecipeTM Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs, Blue Buffalo Company voluntarily recalled the product.

Although the Blue Buffalo Customer Care Resource Team did not receive any reports of dogs exhibiting these symptoms as a result of consuming this product, the FDA informed Blue Buffalo of a single consumer who reported symptoms in one dog, which has since recovered completely.

Blue Buffalo launched an investigation right away, and after consulting with the FDA, the company decided it would be prudent to recall the single production lot in question.

Fromm

Fromm issued its first-ever recall in March 2016. Unacceptable levels of Vitamin D were the reason for the recall of certain cans of dog food.

The recalled cans were “shipped to distributors during the limited time frame from December 2015 to February 2016,” according to the company’s recall announcement.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified Fromm as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats in late June 2019.

However, none of the 16 brands have been recalled as a result of the agency’s ongoing investigation.

The majority of affected pet foods are “grain-free” and/or dry (kibble) dog food formulations.

6. Price

Here is a general comparison of the prices between these dog food brands (using adult dog food).

BrandPrice Per Pound
Blue Buffalo dry dog food$2.13/pound (based on 30 lb bag)
Fromm dry dog food$5.80/pound (based on 5 lb bag)

In Conclusion: Blue Buffalo vs Fromm Dog Food

Both brands of dog food offer nutritional and delicious food that dogs will love, and there isn’t really much difference between both of them, except in the pricing department where Blue Buffalo has the advantage.

I would recommend that you try out both and gauge your dog’s preference. After all, you would want your dog to be eating what it enjoys more since both are very similar.
