Elyria firefighters successfully rescued a stranded dog trapped on a log in the Black River on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred just upstream of a dangerous low-head dam in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio 44035, United States. Julia Thyret and Isabella Roberts reported on the water rescue for WOIO (19 News) on October 22, 2026.

The Elyria Fire Department responded to emergency calls shortly after 5:00 p.m. after receiving reports of a dog motionless on a log near the top of the falls.
Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Szabo noted that the animal appeared calm but exhausted.
Given the hazardous river conditions and proximity to the dam, members of the Elyria Fire Department Dive Team were deployed alongside a tower ladder equipped with a hoist system.
Crews entered the water, secured a life ring around the dog, and safely guided him to shore by 6:30 p.m.
No firefighters were injured during the operation.
The dog had a collar but lacked identification tags, and no owner was found at the scene. Firefighters temporarily named the rescued dog River before placing him in the care of the Lorain County Dog Kennel.
Staff at the Lorain County Dog Kennel reported that River is a healthy, happy dog estimated to be around two years old.
The facility is holding River through Tuesday to give his owner an opportunity to come forward and claim him, after which he will be made available for public adoption.
My thoughts:
- Proximity to low-head dams creates severe water hazards that require specialized dive team equipment and technical rescue setups.
- Specialized water safety gear, such as flotation rings, ensures both animal and responder safety during river extractions.
- Absence of identification tags on pet collars highlights the importance of microchipping for quick owner reunification.
- Local municipal kennels serve a vital role by holding lost animals safely while searching for owners before opening adoption.
- Coordinated municipal emergency responses prevent well-meaning bystanders from putting themselves in danger to rescue pets.
- Dedication shown by local fire crews underscores the strong community commitment to protecting animal life.
