A teenage girl remains hospitalized following a serious dog attack in northwest Miami-Dade, while the owner of the pit bull involved has voluntarily surrendered the animal to local authorities.

The attack took place at a residential property on Northwest 66th Street in Miami-Dade County, Florida 33147, United States. Ivan Taylor reported on the ongoing investigation for CBS Miami on October 22, 2026.

The victim suffered multiple bite wounds and underwent surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where relatives report she is currently recovering.

According to law enforcement, police responded to 911 calls from neighbors on Wednesday, during which a deputy attempted to deploy a Taser before the dog fled the scene.

The 5-year-old pit bull, named Diablo, was located on Thursday and subsequently taken into custody by Miami-Dade Animal Services.

The dog’s owner voluntarily surrendered Diablo, stating that while she did not previously consider him dangerous, she chose to relinquish ownership to prevent any potential future incidents.

The exact circumstances leading up to the attack remain under investigation.

Miami-Dade Animal Services confirmed that the dog faces euthanasia following its surrender. The victim remains under medical care as officials continue their review of the incident.

My thoughts:

  • Responsible pet ownership requires immediate cooperation with animal control authorities following severe bite incidents.
  • Prompt emergency medical care and surgical intervention are critical for treating complex bite trauma.
  • Voluntarily surrendering an animal involved in a severe attack prioritizes community safety over personal attachment.
  • Law enforcement officers face complex challenges when attempting to secure distressed or aggressive animals in residential settings.
  • Municipal animal service agencies must enforce strict protocols when handling domestic animals involved in severe injury cases.
  • Thorough investigations into animal attack circumstances help inform local public safety and pet management guidelines.
