A newly adopted one-eyed dog who sparked a citywide search after escaping his home has been safely captured in California. Leanne Maxwell reported on the successful animal recovery effort on November 3, 2026.

The dog, named Anchovy Jack, had recently undergone eye removal surgery and a neutering procedure before escaping his new residence in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California 94102, United States.

Originally rescued by an East Bay organization, the skittish tan pup spent weeks evading animal control officers while roaming through the Sunset, Richmond, Golden Gate Park, Marina, and Presidio neighborhoods.

San Francisco Animal Care and Control urged residents not to chase the fast-moving dog to prevent him from fleeing into traffic. To resolve the elusive search, officials partnered with lost-pet recovery specialist Susan Packer of K9Reunite.

Packer organized a network of volunteers to log sightings from a distance, establishing Anchovy Jack’s routine patterns without scaring him. After tracking him to a localized territory, Packer set a humane trap overnight, successfully securing the dog.

Anchovy Jack was transferred to San Francisco Animal Care and Control, where shelter veterinarians confirmed he is resting comfortably. Rather than returning to his previous home, he will enter a specialized rescue foster placement to decompress before finding a active family.

My thoughts:

  • Strategic mapping of pet sightings is more effective than direct physical pursuit when capturing fearful runaway dogs.
  • Post-surgical pets require extra containment measures to prevent escapes during their initial home adjustment period.
  • Public awareness campaigns prevent well-meaning residents from accidentally flushing skittish animals into dangerous traffic zones.
  • Specialized pet recovery specialists offer critical expertise for capturing highly elusive lost animals.
  • Post-rescue decompression periods in foster homes help traumatized pets transition smoothly to new permanent families.
  • Matching high-energy rescue dogs with active home environments prevents recurring behavioral escape attempts.
