A inaugural Oktoberfest wiener dog race organized by Dachshunds of Tri-Cities raised over $10,000 to assist local animal rescue organizations with rising veterinary costs. Dan Hanson reported on the successful community fundraiser for Apple Valley News Now on November 4, 2026.

Founded in 2021 by Kori Pollington, the Dachshunds of Tri-Cities group hosted the racing event in Pasco, Franklin County, Washington 99301, United States.
Representatives gathered at Paws Natural Pet Emporium in nearby Kennewick, Washington, to distribute the raised funds to local non-profit animal groups.
Both The Pit Bull Pen and Tumbleweed Cat Rescue received surprise oversized checks for $1,500 each to help cover medical expenses.
Elizabeth Norman, a foster handler for The Pit Bull Pen, emphasized that the monetary donation is vital for continuing rescue operations for abandoned and injured dogs.
The financial support assists Tumbleweed Cat Rescue in covering expensive veterinary procedures, including bloodwork, diagnostic X-rays, and specialized dental care for rescued felines.
Additionally, Dachshunds of Tri-Cities previously contributed $2,500 to address local pet overpopulation and funded cancer care for a cat through Koala Cafe.
Following the success of their inaugural event, organizers are already planning a larger Oktoberfest race next year to accommodate higher turnout.
The group will also host a holiday fundraiser on December 12 featuring Santa photos and a bake sale at Howard Amon Park to support local animals.
My thoughts:
- Community-driven novelty events like wiener dog races serve as highly effective, engaging fundraising channels for local animal welfare groups.
- Grassroots donations provide essential funding for non-profit rescues struggling with inflation and escalating emergency veterinary medical costs.
- Cross-breed community support demonstrates how dedicated dog clubs can successfully benefit feline rescues and specialized pit bull organizations alike.
- Combining volunteer foster networks with active public fundraising creates a sustainable operational foundation for regional animal rescues.
- Scaling up annual charity events to larger venues ensures long-term financial growth and increased community participation.
- Holiday-themed pet events offer accessible avenues for local residents to contribute directly to animal rescue efforts.
