Pet owners in Phoenix are looking to classic favorites, global pop culture, and local desert themes to name their furry companions.

A new report released by Rover reveals a strong overlap between top dog and cat names both locally and globally. Jessica Johnson reported on the findings for FOX 10 Phoenix on October 20, 2026.

According to Rover’s data analysis of user-submitted names, Luna, Charlie, and Milo emerged at the top of the leaderboards for both dogs and cats in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona 85004, United States.

For dogs, Daisy and Bella completed the top five, while Oreo and Kitty joined the top rankings for felines.

Beyond traditional names, local owners are embracing desert-inspired choices such as Mesa, Creek, Phoenix, Coyote, Cholla, Lizard, and Sunny.

The report also highlights distinct fast-climbing trends for 2026 influenced by food, entertainment, and aesthetics like cottagecore and goth culture.

In Phoenix, trending dog names include Harry, Belle, and Kiwi, whereas Spooky, Dusty, and Ella are trending upward for cats.

Globally, similar patterns appear across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe, where names like Luna and Milo continue to dominate.

Certified professional dog trainer and Rover panelist Nicole Ellis noted that pet naming has transformed significantly over the last decade and a half. Rather than basic titles, pet names now function as cultural time capsules reflecting how deeply dogs and cats are integrated into human families.

My thoughts:

  • Overlapping names between dogs and cats reflect a growing trend of treating all pets with similar humanized affection.
  • Local geographical features like desert landscapes provide unique inspiration for personalizing pet identities.
  • Pop culture trends and aesthetic subcultures continuously influence how owners select names for new pets.
  • Large-scale data reports offer fascinating snapshots of broader shifts in pet parenting habits over time.
  • Shared global naming choices demonstrate how connected pet culture has become across different countries.
  • Naming a pet serves as a meaningful milestone that celebrates an animal’s full integration into the family.
