The Humane Society of Harford County is issuing an urgent appeal for community assistance after an influx of dogs pushed its facility to full capacity.

All 67 kennels at the shelter in Fallston, Harford County, Maryland 21047, United States, are currently occupied. Ashley Paul reported on the shelter’s critical space shortage for CBS Baltimore on October 20, 2026.

Shelter representative Erin Long shared that the facility has taken in over 60 dogs during the month of October alone, while adoption rates have struggled to keep pace at roughly half that number.

Economic pressures are believed to be a major contributing factor to the rising intake. Without available kennels, long-term residents like two-year-old Maizie face the unfortunate risk of euthanasia, a last-resort measure the shelter has not been forced to consider in over a decade.

To alleviate overcrowding, the humane society is calling on community members to consider adopting or participating in short-term foster care.

The organization offers a weekend foster program that allows families to host a dog from Friday night through Sunday or Monday.

This temporary arrangement provides animals with a break from kennel stress while helping staff gather valuable behavioral insights to match dogs with permanent homes.

In addition to foster and adoption support, the shelter is accepting donations of pet food, blankets, toys, and financial contributions to support its ongoing operations.

The organization will also host a public vaccine clinic at the Aberdeen Fire Department on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

My thoughts:

  • Economic challenges often lead to increased pet surrenders, placing heavy operational burdens on local animal shelters.
  • Weekend foster programs offer an accessible way for community members to support shelter dogs without long-term commitments.
  • Shelter overcrowding requires proactive community involvement in adoptions to prevent tough euthanasia decisions.
  • Gathering behavioral insights during short-term foster stays significantly improves long-term adoption success rates.
  • Public vaccine clinics hosted by shelters provide essential preventive health services that support community pet care.
  • Material donations like food and bedding help offset operational expenses when shelter resources are stretched thin.
