Paralyzed Rescue Dog Gets Custom Wheelchair and Specialized Foster Placement in Florida

A paralyzed pug mix named Luau has been placed with a specialized foster home after receiving a custom mobility wheelchair from animal services personnel.

The rescue intake and shelter assistance took place through Animal Care & Protective Services, located at 2020 Forest Street in Jacksonville, Florida 32204, United States. WJAX and The Cool Down reported on Luau’s mobility device and foster placement on October 19, 2026.

Luau initially arrived at the Jacksonville municipal shelter suffering from hind leg paralysis, rendering her unable to walk or express her bladder independently. Recognizing her determination to move around, an animal services officer provided her with a custom dog wheelchair, immediately restoring her mobility and independence within the facility.

Because Luau requires intensive hands-on daily care and physical management, shelter staff sought out a specialized foster placement rather than a standard home environment. She was subsequently transferred into the care of Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia, a foster-based non-profit organization that specializes in placing rescue pugs with experienced foster caregivers who understand wheel-assisted pet care routines.

Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia, which processes approximately 195 pugs and pug mixes annually with an operational budget exceeding $349,000, utilizes a regional foster network rather than a centralized shelter facility. Animal Care & Protective Services expressed gratitude to the specialized foster volunteers, noting that Luau now has all necessary resources in place to thrive in her next chapter.

My thoughts:

  • Providing custom mobility carts to paralyzed shelter animals drastically improves their quality of life and overall adoptability.
  • Specialized foster networks play a crucial role in managing special-needs pets that require intensive physical care beyond standard shelter capabilities.
  • Dedicated non-profit breed rescues offer essential relief to municipal shelters by taking in high-needs medical cases.
  • Community donations and public contributions remain vital for sustaining costly rehabilitation and veterinary care programs.
  • Matching special-needs animals with experienced caregivers ensures consistent long-term health management and safety.
  • Collaborative partnerships between municipal animal control agencies and regional rescue groups maximize successful placement outcomes.
