A Sunday morning apartment fire damaged four residential units and displaced five adults before emergency crews brought the heavy blaze under control.

The structure fire occurred at the Haven at Lake Deer apartments located on 24th Street NW in Winter Haven, Florida 33881, United States. Joe Espy reported on the emergency response and pet rescues for FOX 13 on October 18, 2026.

Winter Haven Fire Department crews responded to reports of heavy smoke and active flames shortly before 11 a.m. Firefighters initiated aggressive suppression efforts while simultaneously evacuating residents from adjacent units. Working smoke alarms provided early warning, allowing all occupants to evacuate safely before fire crews brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes.

During search and rescue operations inside the affected building, firefighters successfully rescued four kittens and one dog from the smoke-filled premises. While no civilians or firefighters sustained injuries, four apartments suffered varying degrees of fire, smoke, or water damage, leaving five adults displaced. The American Red Cross responded to provide emergency housing assistance to the displaced residents.

Preliminary fire origin investigations identified the apartment’s laundry area as the starting location for the blaze, though the specific cause remains under active investigation. Fire Chief Drew Neubrand emphasized the vital role working smoke detectors played in saving lives and providing residents with critical evacuation time.

My thoughts:

  • Working smoke detectors provide invaluable early detection, giving occupants crucial seconds to evacuate safely during rapidly spreading structure fires.
  • Rapid multi-unit search tactics are essential for locating and rescuing domestic pets trapped inside heavy smoke environments.
  • Fire safety awareness surrounding household appliances, particularly in laundry rooms, helps minimize common residential fire hazards.
  • Coordinated emergency relief with organizations like the American Red Cross is vital for assisting families displaced by unexpected home fires.
  • Clear departmental communication ensures the public understands both fire origin risks and ongoing safety protocols.
  • Routine testing and maintenance of home smoke alarms remain the single most effective step in residential fire prevention.
