Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have expanded their family by adopting a rescue dog named Javi, nearly two years after the passing of their 17-year-old Shih Tzu, Chewie. PEOPLE reported on the announcement on October 13, 2026.

The talk show hosts shared the news during the October 13 broadcast of Live with Kelly and Mark. Consuelos first met the pup, originally named Lucas, during the show’s annual Adopt a Dog Week segment in partnership with New Jersey rescue organization Pet ResQ Inc.

After bonding on set, Consuelos brought the dog backstage, prompting an introduction with the couple’s existing dog, Lena.

Ripa expressed that Javi’s arrival felt like a special sign, noting his strong resemblance to Chewie, whom the family lost in February 2025.

Although Ripa initially intended to adopt a small black dog matching Lena, Consuelos’ instant connection with Javi convinced the couple to officially adopt him.

Javi will officially move into their home after completing routine medical evaluations. The couple plans to introduce Javi and Lena gradually as he settles into his new environment.

My thoughts:

  • On-air adoption segments on major network broadcasts provide critical visibility for regional rescue organizations and shelter animals seeking permanent homes.
  • Managing introductory meetings and gradual acclimation between existing pets and new rescues helps ensure long-term household harmony.
  • The emotional connection to late pets often guides owners toward specific rescues, helping families open their hearts to new companions after loss.
