A Sound Beach, New York, husband and wife have been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty following a Suffolk County SPCA investigation into the severe neglect of their dog. The charges were reported on October 14, 2026.

Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross stated that the couple—a 39-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman—each face charges of failure to provide necessary veterinary care and failure to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal under New York State law.

Investigators determined that the couple’s five-year-old Coonhound-Boxer mix, named Kobe, suffered extended neglect through October.

Kobe was found severely emaciated with a body condition score of 1 out of 5, weighing only 37 pounds—nearly half the healthy weight of 65 to 67 pounds expected for his breed and age.

Veterinarians also treated Kobe for multiple ulcerative pressure sores across his body, consistent with prolonged confinement in a crate without adequate room or bedding.

Kobe is now receiving emergency medical care and nourishment at a local shelter. The couple was issued Field Appearance Tickets and is set to be arraigned on October 30 in First District Court in Central Islip.

My thoughts:

  • Prolonged crate confinement coupled with food deprivation causes both rapid physical emaciation and painful pressure sores, making immediate veterinary intervention essential for survival.
  • Community reporting to local SPCA authorities remains a vital channel for removing abused animals from dangerous domestic situations before irreversible harm occurs.
  • Enforcement of state animal welfare laws through criminal charges sets necessary legal accountability for pet owners who fail to provide basic life necessities.
