A 64-year-old Austin man faces animal cruelty charges after police discovered dogs living without food or water inside a hot, unsanitary garage, according to FOX 7 Austin. FOX 7 Austin published the report on October 13, 2026.
Austin Police Department officers responded to a home on Coomer Path on August 31 after receiving reports about animals kept on the property.

Upon inspecting the garage, officers found one deceased dog that was severely underweight, alongside a second severely underweight dog chained in an area covered in urine and feces. A third dog was also recovered from the property.
A necropsy determined the deceased dog succumbed to heat exposure, compounded by dehydration and poor body condition.
Two arrest warrants were issued for Nelson Egwu, 64, including a third-degree felony charge related to the deceased dog. Egwu was taken into custody and booked into Travis County Jail.
The two surviving dogs were turned over to Austin Animal Services, where officials expect them to make a full recovery and eventually be placed for adoption. The Austin Police Department reported issuing 11 animal cruelty arrest warrants during September 2026 alone.
My thoughts:
The key detail in this case is the detective’s initiative to check inside the garage during what started as a routine response. That thoroughness prevented further harm to the surviving animals.
The statistic regarding 11 arrest warrants in a single month highlights a concerning spike in severe neglect cases across the area. It underscores the importance of swift intervention by animal cruelty units.
It is reassuring to know that the surviving dogs are receiving proper care and are expected to recover and find permanent homes.
