A Fairfield, Connecticut police K-9 named Penny and her handler, Officer Renaldi, are now ready to deploy from a helicopter. News 12 reported the story on October 12, 2026.

The pair recently attended the Northeast Houndsmen 2026 Annual Fall Training Seminar in Massachusetts. It was a five-day, hands-on course for law enforcement K-9 teams.

The focus was scenario-based trailing. Deployments came from UTVs, rescue boats, and even a Black Hawk helicopter.

Penny is a bloodhound, and there are only eight bloodhound K-9 teams in Connecticut. That means she could be called on to help in a wide range of situations.

Fairfield Police said each training scenario was relevant to the geography of Fairfield and the surrounding area. That ranges from the forests of Lake Mohegan to the waters of Long Island Sound.

The department said Penny is training to be ready for whatever the next call brings.

My thoughts:

The number that stands out is eight. With so few bloodhound teams in the state, a dog like Penny is a scarce resource, and being able to get her to a search quickly matters.

That’s what the helicopter training is really about. Forest and open water are hard places to cover on foot, and a K-9 that’s comfortable boarding an aircraft or a boat can reach a trail faster.

It’s also easy to overlook how much work this is on the handler’s side. The seminar was five days of hands-on scenarios, so both Officer Renaldi and Penny had to get comfortable with each of those deployments.
