A morning walk in a Scarborough subdivision turned into a terrifying ordeal when a wild coyote began chasing a young girl and her small dog.
Lily Kwan, 10, was walking her six-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Macy, near St. Clair Avenue and Warden Street when the aggressive wild animal approached them on the sidewalk.
Having recently read neighborhood warnings about a coyote tracking young children in the area, panic set in immediately.
Home security footage captured Lily running down the sidewalk screaming for help and frantically ringing doorbells, hoping someone would answer.
In the rush to flee, she accidentally dropped her dog’s leash. Instead of running away to save herself, the tiny terrier instinctively put her life on the line to shield her young owner.
Macy courageously turned back and confronted the much larger predator, placing herself directly between the coyote and Lily. The home security video shows the small dog running in circles to distract the wild animal.
At one point during the violent encounter, the coyote clamped its jaws onto Macy and shook her fiercely. Hearing the screams, a neighboring resident rushed outside and successfully chased the coyote away. Lily’s mother, Dorothy Kwan, expressed shock at how bold and aggressive the coyote behaved in broad daylight within a busy subdivision.
Macy sustained roughly eight large, deep puncture wounds along her spine and hind leg. She was rushed to a local emergency veterinary clinic, where she underwent extensive surgery to close the wounds and place surgical drains.
The brave Yorkie spent several days recovering in the intensive care unit before finally being discharged to continue healing at home with her incredibly grateful family.
