Two men have been charged in connection with a September gunfire incident at a Southfield, Michigan residence that resulted in the death of a family dog.

The incident occurred early on September 28 at a home on Sharon Lane.

Homeowner Donald McCuin, 64, was asleep alongside his 68-year-old cousin when nine rounds were fired into the residence.

While neither human occupant was injured by the gunfire—with responding officers finding a bullet lodged in McCuin’s clothing—McCuin’s 3-year-old pit bull, Kane, suffered fatal injuries and had to be euthanized.

On October 9, law enforcement announced charges against 29-year-old DeMarco Lewis and 25-year-old Larry Nelson Jr. Both men face charges of assault with intent to murder alongside multiple felony weapons offenses.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren stated that Lewis confessed to the incident, claiming he targeted the home believing McCuin’s son had stolen his vehicle. Investigators noted there was no evidence a vehicle theft had taken place. Both suspects remain in custody at the Oakland County Jail pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 22.

My thoughts:

The unprovoked nature of targeted home incidents based on unverified assumptions creates extreme danger for residents and pets alike.

The detail regarding a bullet lodging in the victim’s clothing demonstrates how close this incident came to causing human casualties, alongside the tragic loss of the pet.

Law enforcement’s swift identification and charging of both the alleged shooter and the getaway driver ensure full legal accountability through the court system.
