On a chilly December 21st, Deputy Jerad Bearson from the Sisters Station of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office found himself on a mission along the Cold Springs Road cutoff near Highway 20.

His task?

To locate a distressed dog, as reported by a concerned citizen.

Described as a black Labrador retriever, possibly pregnant or recently having given birth, the dog’s plight had stirred the community’s compassion.

A Brave Encounter

Bearson wasted no time.

Soon, he spotted the dog, sitting alert but wary.

As he approached, the dog’s agitation became apparent, leading to attempts to bite. With the assistance of another deputy, they tried coaxing the dog into their patrol cars, but to no avail.

A Call for Assistance

Recognizing the need for specialized equipment, Lieutenant Chad Davis, head of the Sisters office, arrived with the agency’s metal crate.

Despite the dog’s resistance, she eventually sought refuge within the crate, showing signs of exhaustion from her ordeal.

Bearson swiftly contacted Brightside Animal Center in Redmond, where the dog found sanctuary at 4 p.m.

A Remarkable Recovery

The following day, despite her highly malnourished state and signs of a challenging past, the dog delivered a litter of ten puppies, earning her the endearing nickname, “the miracle dog.”

Taylor Campbell, Executive Director of Brightside, marveled at the dog’s resilience, noting her remarkable survival and the strength she found to endure the birthing process.

A Bittersweet Outcome

While all ten puppies were born, three tragically succumbed, likely due to their mother’s ordeal and insufficient nourishment.

However, the remaining seven thrived under Brightside’s care, soon finding loving homes through fostering and adoption.

A Bond Forged

Among the staff, the dog affectionately named Ivy captured the heart of Carol Staropoli, Brightside’s foster coordinator.

Despite a lifetime of working with animals, Ivy was the first dog to truly steal Staropoli’s heart, cementing an unbreakable bond between them.

A Happy Ending

For Deputy Bearson, learning of Ivy’s positive outcome brought joy and closure to the rescue mission.

Brightside’s commitment to high-save sheltering and their emphasis on reuniting lost pets with their owners highlights the importance of microchipping for pet identification, a sentiment echoed by Bearson and Campbell.

A Tale of Resilience and Compassion

In the heartwarming saga of Ivy, the “miracle dog,” and her puppies, we witness the power of resilience and the boundless compassion of those dedicated to animal welfare.

Through collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication, stories like Ivy’s remind us of the profound impact of kindness and the enduring bond between humans and animals.
