Being a K-9 puppy is no easy feat, especially for young recruits like Brody.
Monday, April 6, 2020, marked a significant milestone for the newest member of the Bristol Police Department in Rhode Island.
On this day, Brody had his official swearing-in ceremony.

An Unforgettable Ceremony
The swearing-in ceremony is a crucial moment for every new member of the community, formally marking the start of their new role.
However, Brody’s ceremony happened to be on a Monday, and we all know how Mondays can be…
Though Brody was undoubtedly excited about his new position, he seemed more interested in catching up on sleep than the ceremony itself.
This 12-week-old chocolate Labrador puppy managed to sleep through the entire event, with his partner, Officer Keith Medeiros, standing in for him.
The Adorable Snooze

The sight of the K-9 puppy snoozing on the table during the ceremony, captured on video, quickly became a viral sensation.
The Bristol Police Department broadcasted the ceremony live on their official Facebook page, and viewers couldn’t get enough of the sleeping pup.
As Police Chief Kevin Lynch passionately spoke about Brody, the little guy slept peacefully on the desk.
He only woke up briefly to pose for a photo, much to the delight of the viewers.
A Viral Sensation
Officer Medeiros shared with The Dodo, “He plays really hard, and he sleeps really hard.
When he’s not playing, he’s sleeping, which is kind of tough because he sleeps a lot.”
Despite his nap during the ceremony, Brody looked so comfortable and cute that it didn’t matter to anyone.
The video posted on Facebook has since garnered nearly a million views, with people praising Brody for his adorable nap. “Better get your rest now, because your work is just beginning. Woof,” commented one viewer.
A Bright Future Ahead
Chief Lynch expressed his excitement, saying, “This is a very big day for the Bristol Police Department and for our future. As soon as Brody wakes up, we will have a lot of successes ahead, and he is going to be a superstar for the town of Bristol. I can guarantee it.”
Brody is the first Comfort and Therapy dog for the Bristol Police Department, part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the town’s residents and bridging the gap between the community and the police.
The Meaning Behind the Name

According to the official Bristol Rhode Island webpage, K-9 Brody’s name holds significant meaning.
The ‘B’ represents the town of Bristol, and ‘Rody’ stands for Rhode Island. Boonefield Labradors, a well-known breeder of comfort and therapy dogs in Rindge, New Hampshire, generously donated Brody to the town.
Initially, the police department considered bringing in a bomb-sniffing dog. However, they decided to embrace School Resource Officer Medeiros’ proposal for a therapy dog instead.
Brody’s Important Role
Brody’s job will involve meeting the community, visiting schools and nursing homes, and comforting crime victims.
Therapy dogs like Brody play a crucial role in helping people cope with stress, anxiety, PTSD, and various other emotions.
A Timely Addition
Brody arrived at a time when he was greatly needed, especially during the challenging Covid-19 period.
Officer Medeiros noted, “People are really stressed, especially in law enforcement. Just by walking in the police department with Brody, people immediately smile. They immediately get into a better place. They want to pet him, want to hug him, and it’s just a really good thing.”
A Promising Future
Despite the weight of his responsibilities, there is no doubt that Brody will handle them with grace. Great things await him; he just needs to sleep and rest well.
