A stray dog named Pompeii arrived at the Humane Society of Parkersburg on June 23, 2025, frightened and disoriented after being found on her own. Staff estimated she was only six months old at the time. Despite catching the interest of a few potential adopters over the following weeks, she was passed over again and again, and ended up spending nearly three months at the shelter waiting for a home.

What no one at the shelter knew was that Pompeii already had a family, one that had been searching for her since May. According to shelter manager Samantha Tannous, the owners made a two hour drive to the shelter after somehow connecting the dots, arriving just before closing time. The moment they saw her, there was no doubt. The dog they knew as Bitty had finally been found.
Tannous said the reunion brought staff and volunteers who were present to tears. The family’s search had stretched on for months with no leads, and the shelter had no way of knowing the dog in their care already had a name and a home waiting for her.
Commentary: The detail that gets me here is the timing. Pompeii had been available for adoption for weeks, seen by multiple interested families, and still ended up staying at the shelter until her actual owners happened to make it there just before closing. A few days later and the outcome could have been completely different. It’s a good argument for shelters keeping records long enough, and for owners not giving up the search even months in, since persistence is really the only thing that made this reunion possible at all.
