A 50-year-old South Carolina resident required emergency air medical transport to North Carolina after being maul-attacked by a pack of unrestrained dogs in Chesterfield County. Noah Feit reported on the severe animal attack and subsequent law enforcement arrests for Yahoo News on November 3, 2026.

The incident occurred on October 28, 2026, as the victim was walking toward McCormick’s Grocery Store near the intersection of Kirkley Road and Peach Orchard Road in Pageland, Chesterfield County, South Carolina 29728, United States.

A pack of domestic dogs—including a Boxer and several pit bull mixes—suddenly ambushed the pedestrian in an unprovoked violent assault.

Two individuals riding an all-terrain vehicle in the immediate area witnessed the ongoing mauling and intervened to rescue the victim from the attacking pack.

The victim suffered extensive bite wounds across his body and was immediately airlifted to a trauma hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, for emergency medical treatment.

Investigators with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit identified two Pageland residents, Amanda Hope Freeman, 41, and Kenneth Dale Wroten Sr., 56, as the owners of the attacking pack.

Law enforcement officers placed both individuals under arrest, charging each owner with 10 misdemeanor counts of allowing dangerous animals to run at large.

Chesterfield County law enforcement officials issued a public reminder stating that all pet owners bear strict legal responsibility for the proper care, containment, and control of their domestic animals.

Authorities emphasized that dogs exhibiting aggressive behavioral histories must remain securely restrained at all times to prevent severe public safety hazards.

Sheriff’s office records indicate this incident represents the second severe dog attack reported in Chesterfield County within the month, following an October 6 incident where a runaway student was hospitalized after being mauled by two dogs in Patrick, South Carolina.

My thoughts:

  • Unrestrained domestic dogs roaming in packs present severe physical threats to unsuspecting pedestrians and rural community members.
  • Rapid intervention by bystanders utilizing motorized vehicles can prevent catastrophic or fatal outcomes during active animal attacks.
  • Strict municipal containment enforcement and owner accountability measures are crucial for protecting public safety from dangerous animals.
  • Air ambulance services provide vital emergency transport when rural mauling victims require specialized trauma center care.
  • Legal penalties for allowing aggressive dogs to run at large must reflect the severe consequences inflicted on innocent victims.
  • Multiple pack attacks within a single county highlight the urgent need for proactive animal control patrols and leash law enforcement.
