A South Brunswick, New Jersey police officer shot a dog that attacked him Thursday, October 1, 2026, while he was responding to a report of escaped livestock, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The dog died of its injuries, Prosecutor Linda Estremera said Friday.

Police had received calls from two passing drivers who reported livestock loose near the road, where it could be struck by a vehicle.

While walking up a driveway to find the homeowner, the officer was attacked by a dog on the property and fired his weapon to stop the attack.

He was taken to Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, treated, and released in stable condition.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation as the independent agency required under state Attorney General Law Enforcement Directive 2019-4, and the case remains ongoing. Anyone with information was asked to contact Detective Stenly Vertus.

My thoughts: What stands out is how far removed this is from the kind of situation that usually ends this way, the officer wasn’t responding to anything involving the dog or its owner at all, he was trying to get loose livestock off the road before a car hit it.

That’s worth sitting with: a routine, almost mundane call turned into a shooting because of circumstances nobody involved could have anticipated walking up that driveway.

With the investigation still open and no further detail yet on the dog’s breed or the property owner, there’s not much more to say until the independent review is complete.
