Pet Helpers adoption center has issued an urgent public appeal for at least 15 temporary foster homes after reaching maximum capacity following an unexpected influx of animals.

The shelter is located in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina 29412, United States. Rory Austin reported on the critical shelter situation for WCBD News 2 on October 26, 2026.

The emergency stems from a recent Charleston County animal control seizure connected to an ICE deportation case, which required the shelter to immediately house nine large dogs.

To manage the sudden influx, staff members were forced to set up temporary pop-up crates within existing kennel corridors, placing animals in overly tight quarters.

Executive Director Melissa Susko stated that the shelter has reached a critical tipping point and called on the local community to step forward.

Pet Helpers is welcoming first-time foster volunteers and providing all necessary care supplies, including dog food, crates, toys, medical prescriptions, and staff guidance.

While certain dogs require single-pet homes, others can be integrated into households with existing pets following behavioral assessments.

Community members interested in fostering are urged to visit the shelter or contact Pet Helpers directly to assist in freeing up kennel space.

My thoughts:

  • Unexpected animal control seizures create immediate space crises for non-profit shelters operating near capacity.
  • Community foster networks serve as an essential safety valve during sudden shelter overcrowding emergencies.
  • Providing full medical, crate, and food support lowers financial barriers for first-time foster volunteers.
  • Overcrowded shelter conditions increase stress levels among animals, making temporary foster placement critical.
  • Cross-agency cases involving law enforcement or federal deportations often leave pets needing emergency shelter placement.
  • Behavioral evaluations ensure foster dogs are placed in appropriate home environments for their safety.
