Trooper John Kronander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Medina Post was checking a rest area off I-76 eastbound in Guilford Township on the morning of August 23, 2026, when something off to the side caught his attention. Sgt. Jeremy Kindler later explained that Kronander noticed a small cage set apart from the area where trucks usually park, with a cardboard box on top and movement coming from inside.

When Kronander lifted the box, he found a puppy locked inside the crate with no food or water, left alone near the noise and traffic of a busy interstate. Bodycam footage captured him talking to the frightened dog as he worked to get it out, asking gently how long it had been there and reassuring it that it was safe now. Despite the circumstances, the puppy wasn’t afraid, and quickly began playing with the trooper once freed, pawing at a water bottle Kronander offered as a makeshift toy.
Kronander brought the puppy back to the Medina Post, fed and watered it, and the dog was later transferred to the Medina County SPCA. The shelter said in a statement that whoever left the puppy behind had put a life that was completely dependent on them at serious risk, and confirmed the animal is safe but not yet available for adoption while it goes through the required legal process. Animal abandonment is a crime in Ohio.
Commentary: The detail that stands out most in the bodycam footage isn’t the abandonment itself, unfortunately a recurring problem, it’s how quickly the puppy trusted the person who found it, tail wagging and playing within minutes of being pulled out of a crate it had likely been left in for hours. It says something about how resilient young animals can be, even after being treated as disposable by whoever left them behind. The shelter’s point is the more important one though, an animal that depends entirely on a person for its safety was simply left near a highway, and it was only a routine rest stop check that changed the outcome.
