A Wyoming animal rescue has successfully found a new home for a pair of senior Border Collies whose owner was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer.

The rehoming effort was managed by Must Love Dogs Sanctuary in Saratoga, Carbon County, Wyoming 82331, United States. Bigfoot99 reported on the rehoming effort and community response on October 19, 2026.

The sanctuary’s founder, Theresa Manley, described the situation as the saddest case she had encountered in over three years of operating the non-profit organization.

An initial referral came from a friend in nearby Encampment who learned that a local resident could no longer care for his two senior dogs, Joy and Bosco, following his terminal diagnosis. The mother-and-son bonded pair, both in their early teens, required immediate rehoming support.

After Manley shared the story on social media, two qualified prospective families reached out.

The pair was adopted by a ranching family that had recently lost two senior dogs and wanted to provide a safe home for the Border Collies.

Must Love Dogs Sanctuary covered all initial medical expenses, including vaccinations and veterinary care, ensuring a smooth transition for the dogs.

Approximately two weeks after the adoption, Manley reported that both Joy and Bosco have settled in well with their new family. The 501(c)(3) organization relies on community donations to fund its animal welfare services across Carbon County.

My thoughts:

  • Compassionate community networking plays a vital role in ensuring pets are safely rehomed when owners face unexpected terminal illnesses.
  • Keeping bonded senior pets together during rehoming minimizes stress and preserves their emotional well-being.
  • Covering initial veterinary costs removes financial barriers for families willing to adopt senior animals with medical needs.
  • Non-profit animal rescues provide essential support systems for pet owners navigating severe personal and health crises.
  • Ranch environments offer excellent space and activity outlets for working breeds like Border Collies, even in their senior years.
  • Public donations and community support remain crucial for sustaining local animal welfare operations.
