A 4-year-old boy who wandered away from his home in Southampton, Massachusetts, was found safe in the woods on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) located him.

The boy was reported missing along with two dogs at about 11:10 a.m. SERT members responded right away to assist the Southampton Police Department.
The State Police Air Wing, K-9 and drone units also joined the search. So did troopers from the Northampton Barracks and DCR Rangers.
Search teams moved into a thickly wooded area near the home. At about 1:00 p.m., SERT Trooper Timothy Fanion found the boy in the woods.
He was uninjured and was returned safely to his family. The State Police released Air Wing video of the rescue.
SERT is a unit that gives partner agencies a trained field force on short notice. It handles missing person searches and other situations that need a cohesive team.
Its members are trained in search management, search methods, land navigation, search and rescue leadership, and pathfinder techniques.
My thoughts:
What stands out is the speed. The boy was reported missing just after 11 a.m. and was found by about 1 p.m., with a helicopter, K-9s, drones, troopers, and rangers all in the search.
The release is short and doesn’t say what happened to the two dogs reported missing with him. That part of the story is unconfirmed, so it’s best not to fill it in.
The simple takeaway is that a fast, coordinated response made the difference in thick woods where a small child is hard to see from the ground.
