A man is facing charges after his dog attacked a police K-9 while officers were assisting the FBI with a search warrant, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office. The incident happened in July 2026 on Adams Avenue in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, while Jeannette police were helping execute a warrant related to a wanted person.

According to the DA’s office, 63 year old Gino Ferrari told authorities at the scene that the person they were searching for wasn’t at the home. He gave officers consent to search after removing his own dog, a pit bull, and was permitted to enter the home to secure it. Moments later, police said they heard the dog barking as it aggressively charged toward a fence in the direction of K-9 Diesel.
The dog made it over the fence and attacked Diesel, latching onto his neck. Officers attempted to use a taser on the dog, which was unsuccessful, and ultimately used pepper spray to get it to release Diesel. Diesel was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment of puncture wounds and scratch marks.
While at the scene, police said a witness told them Ferrari’s dog had previously tried to go after another person who was walking their own dog, and claimed it had killed a puppy. That claim has not been independently confirmed. Ferrari has been charged with injuries to a police dog, recklessly endangering another person, and inflicting injury to a domestic animal.
My thoughts: This is a straightforward report of an ongoing legal matter rather than a story with a tidy resolution, Diesel is being treated and charges have been filed, but the broader questions about the dog’s history and what happens next are still unresolved. I’m noting it here mainly to keep the record accurate rather than to draw any conclusions beyond what’s been officially confirmed.
