A dog named Archer ended up helping with his own rescue on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after getting too close to traffic along the Border Highway in El Paso, Texas. El Paso Animal Services said the situation prompted an Animal Protection Officer to team up with the El Paso Police Department to safely get Archer off the busy road.

According to a post from El Paso Animal Services, “while El Paso Police Department officers were trying to catch Archer, he decided to make things easier and just jumped right into one of the police cars.” Animal Protection Officer Cobo then responded to help get Archer somewhere safe.

Once Archer was secured, Officer Cobo scanned him for a microchip. Because his information was up to date, Animal Services was able to identify his owner and get in touch with his family right away. “Before long, this unexpected passenger was reunited with the person who had been looking for him,” the department said.

El Paso Animal Services said Archer’s story is proof that microchips work, and that keeping the information on them current can make all the difference when a pet unexpectedly gets loose.

My thoughts: This one is just a nice reminder of how much a microchip can shortcut an otherwise stressful situation. Archer didn’t have to be chased down or coaxed out of traffic for very long, he basically resolved the hardest part of his own rescue by climbing into the car himself, and from there it was a quick scan and a phone call before he was back with his family. It’s a small, almost funny moment on its own, but it’s also a pretty clean example of the system working exactly the way it’s supposed to.
