A high-altitude hike in the Lake District turned into a major rescue operation after a large dog suddenly collapsed and was unable to move while ascending England’s highest peak.
The four-year-old black Labrador, named Ollie, was tackling Scafell Pike with his owners when he suffered a severe injury to his leg and paw pads, leaving the 38kg pet completely stranded on the rugged, steep mountain terrain.
Realizing they were unable to carry the heavy dog down the treacherous trails safely on their own, his concerned owners made an emergency call for help.
The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team responded swiftly to the call, deploying a dedicated group of team members up the mountain to assist the stranded family. Upon reaching the location, the rescue volunteers carefully evaluated Ollie and bundled the cooperative canine into a specialized insulated mountain rescue stretcher. The stretcher was equipped with a wheel attachment to help navigate the challenging and uneven rocky paths.
It took the rescue team more than four hours of careful maneuvering to transport Ollie safely down the mountain to the valley base. Throughout the long descent, the brave Labrador remained incredibly calm, resting quietly inside the warm orange rescue bags. Once safely back at the base, Ollie was happily reunited with his relieved owners and taken to receive veterinary care, leaving the mountain rescue volunteers to be praised for treating the beloved family pet with the exact same dedication as a human hiker.
