A courageous seven-year-old dog named Judah requires urgent surgical intervention after bullet fragments lodged in his head shifted, threatening severe neurological damage. Shirah Matsuzawa reported on the hero dog’s medical plight for FOX 13 Seattle on November 1, 2026.

The incident stems from a domestic violence shooting in November 2024 in Seattle, King County, Washington 98101, United States, when Lauren Wiggins attempted to leave her home. Her ex-fiancé produced a firearm and shot Wiggins in the leg.

Judah immediately intervened by attacking the shooter, taking two bullets to his head and shoulder to protect his owner.

Wiggins suffered permanent injuries from the domestic attack, leaving her paralyzed from the knee down on her right leg and reliant on an orthotic device to walk.

At the time of the shooting, attending veterinarians determined that removing the bullet fragments lodged in Judah’s head was too dangerous to perform immediately.

Recently, Judah developed noticeable swelling in his head, prompting an immediate veterinary evaluation.

Medical examinations confirmed that the bullet fragments have shifted, posing severe risks of brain damage or permanent blindness if left unaddressed.

Veterinarians have determined that emergency surgery is now necessary to extract the fragments and stabilize Judah’s health.

Facing substantial veterinary expenses for the complex operation and post-operative care, Wiggins has organized a public GoFundMe campaign to help save her companion.

Wiggins describes Judah as her lifeline, crediting his heroic actions with saving her life during the traumatic domestic assault.

Community members and animal advocates are rallying to support the fundraising effort to ensure the brave dog receives his lifesaving procedure.

My thoughts:

  • Protective canine instincts can save human lives during severe domestic violence incidents.
  • Long-term monitoring of retained ballistic fragments is essential for managing delayed health complications in pets.
  • Public fundraising campaigns provide vital financial support for expensive emergency veterinary procedures.
  • Heroic service and emotional bond between pets and domestic violence survivors aid recovery.
  • Specialized surgical techniques are required to safely extract shifted metal fragments near canine brain tissue.
  • Domestic violence intervention resources remain critical for protecting both human victims and their pets.
