In Cobb County, Georgia, firefighters from Station 21 put brand-new emergency pet care training directly into action when an emergency veterinary clinic requested help delivering a massive litter of 15 puppies.

Just one week prior to the delivery, veterinarians from VEG ER for Pets provided specialized pet CPR and care training to Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services. When a pregnant rescue dog arrived at the clinic needing an emergency delivery of 15 pups, Dr. Lauren Savoy and her team realized they needed extra trained hands and called the nearby fire station for support.
Key details of the unique emergency delivery include:
Immediate Hands-On Assistance: Firefighters Brian Powell, Damien Whitehead, and Chris Newman responded to the clinic, assisting veterinarians by removing amniotic sacs, clearing puppy airways, administering required medications, and keeping the newborns warm.
Lifesaving Impact: Clinic staff noted that without the firefighters’ immediate assistance during the rapid births, many of the 15 puppies would not have survived.
Heartwarming Reunion: A few weeks after the emergency C-section, the healthy puppies visited Fire Station 21 to reunite with their rescuers.
A Permanent Bond: Engineer Chris Newman, who assisted during the delivery, decided to officially adopt one of the rescued puppies from the litter.
“Initially, we were all very excited, and then we kind of looked around and thought, ‘oh my gosh, there’s only like five of us here,'” recalled Dr. Lauren Savoy. “It was such a unique opportunity that we got to be a part of, and we want to keep it going,” added firefighter Chris Newman.
