Two Broward County Sheriff’s deputies are being credited with saving seven dogs, including five puppies, from a house fire in Parkland, Florida, in June 2026. Deputies Moses Arce and Hayden Stachura arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The usual entry points into the home were blocked, so the deputies searched for another way inside. Once they found one, they worked alongside the homeowner to get all seven dogs out, loading the puppies and their parents into a laundry basket to carry them to safety while firefighters worked to put out the flames.
“Thanks to the deputies’ decisive actions, every dog survived without injury,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District Captain Michele McCardle. “Their actions are a reminder that our deputies are willing to risk their own safety to protect every member of our community, including those who cannot call for help themselves.”
In August 2026, the two deputies were honored at a Parkland City Commission meeting, where they received a commendation and, according to the city, a special thanks from one of the puppies they saved.
My thoughts: What stands out here is the improvisation. There was no specialized rescue equipment involved, just two deputies, a homeowner, and a laundry basket, working together under pressure to get seven dogs out of a burning building through an entry point they had to find on the fly. It’s easy to think of animal rescues during fires as something firefighters handle with specific tools built for the job, but this is a reminder that sometimes it just comes down to people making a fast decision and following through on it. The fact that all seven dogs came out without injury says a lot about how well they worked together in a moment that could have gone very differently.
