Green Bay Metro Fire Department crews successfully rescued a dog during a third-floor apartment fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire units responded just after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, to an apartment complex on West Walnut Street in Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin 54303, United States.

WBAY news staff reported on the emergency response and rescue efforts on October 29, 2026.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters observed smoke emanating from a third-floor unit and located an active fire inside one of the bedrooms.

Crews acted quickly to extinguish the flames and located a dog trapped inside the apartment, bringing the pet to safety without injury. No human injuries were reported during the incident.

Fire officials noted that while the bedroom suffered heavy fire and smoke damage, the rest of the unit and the adjacent hallway sustained only light smoke damage because the resident had closed the bedroom door, effectively isolating the blaze.

An adult resident, a baby, and the dog were displaced by the incident and are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Green Bay Police Department and the Brown County Public Safety Communications Center. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.

My thoughts:

  • Closing interior doors when leaving a room or sleeping significantly limits fire spread and smoke damage.
  • Rapid firefighter intervention prevents isolated apartment fires from extending to adjacent residential units.
  • Animal rescues during active structure fires prevent pet casualties and reduce smoke inhalation risks.
  • Emergency displacement services provided by the American Red Cross offer vital temporary relief for families with infants.
  • Working smoke detectors remain essential for early hazard detection and timely emergency dispatch.
  • Multi-agency coordination between dispatch, police, and fire crews ensures efficient scene management.
