A cross-country Delta Air Lines flight was forced to make an unexpected detour after a passenger’s service dog experienced a sudden medical emergency mid-flight.

Delta Flight 2453, traveling from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, was cruising normally when a service dog on board suddenly became severely ill and unresponsive.

Recognizing the severity of the animal’s condition, the flight crew quickly consulted with medical professionals on the ground. Out of an abundance of caution and care for the passenger’s vital companion, the pilots made the compassionate decision to divert the aircraft to Utah. The plane landed safely at Salt Lake City International Airport, where emergency medical teams and airport personnel were already waiting on the tarmac.

Upon landing, the dog and its owner were immediately escorted off the plane so the animal could receive urgent veterinary attention.
