The Central Texas city of Buda—known as the “Wiener Dog Capital of Texas”—has unveiled a massive steel sculpture in Buda City Park to celebrate nearly three decades of its famous dachshund races. Texas Monthly published the report on October 13, 2026.

Standing 10 feet tall and 19 feet long, the Cor-Ten weathering steel statue was designed to look like a racing dachshund with its ears blowing back in the wind. Over time, the steel will naturally rust to a deeper brown hue.
The landmark pays homage to the annual Buda Wiener Dog Races, a tradition started in 1997 by the Buda Lions Club that draws thousands of visitors and over 300 competing dachshunds and “chiweenies” every spring.
The upcoming event in April 2027 will mark the 30th anniversary of the races.
The project was spearheaded by Jennifer L. Storm, CEO of the Buda Economic Development Corporation, in collaboration with Art Seen Alliance.
Storm envisioned the installation as a roadside attraction to encourage drivers on Interstate 35 to stop and explore the local community.
My thoughts:
Roadside architecture and oversized animal sculptures have a proven track record of boosting local tourism. By creating a permanent installation, Buda transforms an annual festival into a year-round attraction.
Using Cor-Ten weathering steel is a smart material choice for outdoor public art. The natural oxidation process gives the sculpture the distinct reddish-brown color of a dachshund while ensuring durability against weather.
The upcoming 30th anniversary in April 2027 makes this milestone reveal timely, offering both residents and travelers a fun physical tribute to three decades of community history.
