A 10-year-old brindled mutt named Rocky went missing in the Montezuma area of Summit County, Colorado on December 28, 2025, after slipping out of his harness. What followed was a search that stretched on for 43 days through some of the harshest winter conditions the Colorado mountains have to offer.

Summit Lost Pet Rescue, a local organization dedicated to finding missing pets, led the effort to track Rocky down. Given his age and the freezing conditions, many assumed the odds of finding him alive were slim. But the organization kept at it, relying on community sightings and persistent searching, until Rocky was finally located and safely reunited with his owner.
The rescue group later shared video of the reunion, which quickly gained attention for how emotional the moment was. For a 10-year-old dog to survive well over a month outdoors, through a Colorado winter, is being called remarkable by those who worked the case, and a clear example of how resilient dogs can be even under extreme circumstances.
Commentary: What makes this one stick is the math. Forty-three days is over six weeks, in winter, for a dog who’s a decade old and presumably past his prime for surviving alone outdoors. Most people’s instinct after the first week or two would be to assume the worst. The fact that a volunteer-run, donation-based rescue group kept searching that long, without any guarantee of a happy ending, says as much about the humans in this story as it does about Rocky.
