Ingredients List

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (organic, unrefined): $5.00
  • 1/4 cup turmeric powder (organic): $3.00
  • 1/4 cup parsley (fresh, finely chopped): $1.50
  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay (food grade): $4.00
  • Pinch of black pepper (freshly ground, optional, for turmeric absorption): $0.50
  • Total Estimated Cost: $14.00

You can swap coconut oil for MCT oil, but coconut oil is usually easier to find. If you don’t have fresh parsley, a tablespoon of dried parsley flakes works too.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Melt the coconut oil gently. You can do this in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds or in a small pot over low heat. It should be liquid, but not hot.
  • Add the turmeric powder to the melted coconut oil. Stir it until it’s fully combined and there are no lumps.
  • Next, mix in the finely chopped fresh parsley.
  • Sprinkle in the bentonite clay. This helps bind the treats and adds minerals.
  • Add a tiny pinch of black pepper if you’re using it. This helps your dog absorb the turmeric better.
  • Stir everything together until it forms a uniform paste. It should be thick but pourable.
  • Pour the mixture into silicone molds. Small bone shapes or paw prints work well.
  • If you don’t have molds, you can pour it into a shallow dish lined with parchment paper and cut into squares once it’s firm.
  • Put the molds or dish into the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until the treats are completely solid.
  • Once firm, pop the treats out of the molds.

Look, prepping and cooking for your dog is great, but sometimes you might be too tired or maybe a tad lazy, or maybe you just want to give yourself a well deserved break.

Feeding Guidelines

  • For small dogs (under 20 lbs): 1 treat per day.
  • For medium dogs (20-50 lbs): 1-2 treats per day.
  • For large dogs (over 50 lbs): 2-3 treats per day.

Adjust these amounts based on your dog’s activity level and overall diet. A very active dog might need a bit more. Pregnant or nursing dogs may also benefit from slightly more, but always check with your vet. If your dog is overweight, consider giving fewer treats or adjusting their main meal accordingly. Always talk to your veterinarian before making big changes to your dog’s diet, especially for puppies, seniors, or dogs with existing health issues.

Nutritional Benefits of the Recipe

  • Coconut Oil: Contains lauric acid, which helps fight bacteria and yeast in the mouth, supporting dental hygiene. It’s also great for skin and coat health and provides healthy fats for energy.
  • Turmeric: A powerful anti-inflammatory. It can help reduce gum inflammation and pain, and has antioxidant properties that benefit overall health.
  • Parsley: Acts as a natural breath freshener, thanks to its chlorophyll content. It also provides vitamins K, C, and A, and helps with digestion.
  • Bentonite Clay: Helps detoxify the body and provides essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. It also gives the treats a firmer texture.
  • Black Pepper: While optional, it contains piperine, which significantly increases the bioavailability and absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.

Storage and Serving Tips

  • Store these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
  • For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
  • Serve at room temperature.
  • You can give them as a standalone treat or crumble a small piece over their regular food for an added boost.

Common Questions & Troubleshooting

Can I give these treats to my puppy?

Yes, in moderation. For puppies, especially small breeds, start with half a treat daily. Always consult your vet first, as puppies have specific dietary needs.

What if my dog doesn’t like the taste?

Some dogs might be picky. You can try adding a tiny bit of peanut butter (xylitol-free) to the mixture before molding to entice them. Or, crumble a treat over their favorite wet food.

Are there any side effects to turmeric?

In large amounts, turmeric can cause mild stomach upset in some dogs. That’s why portion control is important. The amount in this recipe is safe for most dogs. If your dog has a bleeding disorder or is on blood thinners, talk to your vet first as turmeric can have blood-thinning properties.
