How to Choose a “Shoulder-Safe” Harness
You don’t have to go back to a neck-straining collar, but you do need to look for a specific shape.
- The “Y-Strap” Essential: Always choose a harness with a “Y” shape that connects between the front legs and goes over the shoulders, leaving the shoulder joint completely visible and free to move. This ensures the “pull point” is on the sturdy chest bone, not the mobile shoulder joint.
- The “Two-Finger” Gap: The strap behind the front legs should be far enough back that it doesn’t rub the armpit “axilla” area. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the strap and the back of the dog’s elbow.
