History of Whippets

Let’s start with a bit of a history lesson, shall we

Whippets were developed in England in the 19th century, originally bred for hunting small game and racing.

Thanks to their swift speed and keen hunting instincts, they became a favorite among both hunters and racing enthusiasts.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Typically, Whippets stand between 18 to 22 inches tall and weigh around 25 to 40 pounds.
  • Coat: They have short, smooth coats that come in various colors, including fawn, brindle, and blue.

Temperament and Behavior

Whippets are soooo gentle and affectionate nature, and that makes them wonderful companions.

Here’s a bit more of their temperament so you get to know them better:

  • Affectionate and loyal: Whippets form strong bonds with their families as they are super loyal and loving, often seeking out human companionship. They thrive on attention and enjoy being involved in family activities.
  • Playful and energetic: While they have tons of energy and love to run, Whippets balance this with a calm demeanor at home. They enjoy playful activities and games, making them great for families with children or other pets. You know for sure that they can bring joy and laughter to any household.
  • Gentle nature: Whippets are generally gentle with children and can be good playmates. BUT, supervision is needed, especially with younger kids, as their speed and excitement can sometimes lead to accidental knocks.
  • Intelligent and trainable: Whippets are super smart and can be trained pretty easily. Just like all dogs, they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques. Give them early socialization and training and you will help them develop good manners and confidence.
  • Quiet and low barking: This has to be one of my favorite aspects of Whippets. They tend to be quiet and do not bark excessively. But this also means they are not known as watchdogs, as they often prefer to observe rather than alert you to visitors.

Suitability and Ideal Homes

Whippets are suitable for a variety of living situations, but there are some factors you should consider first:

Gentle owners: They respond best to owners who can provide gentle guidance and positive reinforcement. A firm but kind approach works well, as Whippets are sensitive dogs that may become anxious with harsh training methods.

Active families: Ideal for families that enjoy outdoor activities, Whippets love to run and play. A home with a secure yard is perfect, as they require space to stretch their legs. They also enjoy going for walks or participating in dog sports like lure coursing.

Apartment living: Surprisingly, Whippets can adapt well to apartment living, as long as they get enough exercise. When I used to live in one, I often see them around the neighborhood. I think that their calm nature indoors makes them suitable for smaller spaces, but you need to make regular trips to the park or open areas to keep them happy and healthy.

Social Environment: Whippets thrive in homes where they can be part of family life. They do not do well when left alone for long periods, as they can become bored and anxious. A household with multiple family members or other pets can provide the companionship they crave.

Care and Maintenance

  • Grooming: Whippets require minimal grooming due to their short coats. Regular brushing helps control shedding.
  • Exercise: They need regular exercise to stay healthy, with a mix of playtime and brisk walks.
  • Health: Generally, Whippets are healthy, but they can be prone to certain genetic conditions, so regular vet check-ups are essential.

Amazing and Uncommon Facts

  • Speed: Whippets can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, making them one of the fastest dog breeds.
  • Sighthounds: As sighthounds, they have exceptional eyesight and can spot movement from great distances.
  • Couch potatoes: Despite their athleticism, Whippets are notorious for being couch potatoes, often preferring to lounge around when not exercising.

Positive Traits of Whippets

  • Affectionate: Whippets are known for their loving nature.
  • Sociable: They tend to be friendly and enjoy being around people.
  • Energetic: These dogs are playful and love engaging in activities.
  • Devoted: Whippets exhibit strong loyalty to their families.
  • Mild-Mannered: They have a gentle disposition, making them great companions.

Challenges of Whippet Temperament

  • Stubbornness: They can sometimes be headstrong and resistant to commands.
  • Shyness: Whippets may display timid behavior in unfamiliar situations.
  • Dependence: They often seek constant companionship and may feel anxious when left alone.
  • Chasing Instinct: Whippets have a natural tendency to chase, so it’s essential to keep them on a leash or in a secure area when outdoors.
  • Compatibility Issues: They may not coexist well with cats or other small animals in the home.
