Police and Animal Services officers in Oakland are investigating a series of violent dog attacks across local public parks that have left at least one pet dead and a person injured.

The targeted attacks are believed to be intentionally provoked by the dogs’ owner. Harry Harris reported on the investigation for the Bay Area News Group on October 29, 2026.

Authorities suspect the animals involved are Cane Corsos, a breed capable of weighing over 100 pounds, and believe they may be responsible for at least a half-dozen separate incidents.

As of Thursday afternoon, law enforcement has made no arrests, and the dogs have not been located.

The most recent reported attack occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Lakeside Park near Children’s Fairyland in Oakland, Alameda County, California 94610, United States.

A woman was walking her dog when two large canines charged and launched a fatal attack on her pet.

Additional incidents linked to the same dogs occurred between early September and October 20 at multiple sites, including Lakeside Park, Eastshore Park at Grand Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, Snow Park at 19th and Harrison streets, and Joaquin Miller Park.

Oakland police and Animal Services urge victims and witnesses to contact investigators or non-emergency dispatch.

My thoughts:

  • Deliberately weaponizing large dogs against innocent park visitors and pets constitutes severe criminal intent.
  • Powerful breeds like Cane Corsos can inflict fatal injuries rapidly when uncontained or encouraged to attack.
  • Increased municipal park patrols are crucial to safeguard public recreational areas and locate loose, aggressive animals.
  • Multi-agency coordination between local police and animal control accelerates victim response and evidence collection.
  • Public awareness alerts empower local dog owners to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Strictly holding negligent or malicious pet owners accountable helps deter future animal-involved assaults.
