Former Premier League footballer Jermaine Pennant was saved by his pet dog, King, after being attacked by an aggressive German Shepherd.

The incident occurred in North London, Greater London, N1, United Kingdom. Liam Gilliver reported on Pennant’s recovery and public tribute for The Independent on October 26, 2026.

The 43-year-old Talksport pundit shared details of the attack on social media, describing how he attempted to protect King when the German Shepherd latched onto his leg.

Pennant was pinned to the ground and bitten four times before King intervened to fight off the attacking dog, suffering only a minor nip in the process. Medical personnel required over 50 stitches to close Pennant’s severe leg wounds.

Following the ordeal, Pennant expressed relief that King was uninjured and credited his loyal dog with saving his life.

He also thanked TV journalist Mimmi Montgomery for providing care and assistance during his recovery. Pennant indicated that he had not filed an official police report regarding the incident.

Pennant enjoyed a 19-year professional football career, making 231 Premier League appearances for clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool before retiring in 2018.

My thoughts:

  • Domestic dogs frequently display fierce protective instincts when their owners face sudden physical threats.
  • Severe canine bite wounds require immediate emergency medical care and extensive suturing to prevent secondary infection.
  • Off-leash or aggressive dog attacks in urban areas pose significant safety risks to pedestrians and responsible pet owners.
  • Post-incident care and emotional support are essential for victims recovering from violent animal encounters.
  • Prompt veterinary checks ensure protective pets have not sustained internal injuries or hidden puncture wounds.
  • Reporting dog attacks to local authorities helps prevent recurring incidents in public neighborhoods.
