Nineteen Chihuahuas were rescued from neglected conditions inside a residence in Willow Spring, Wake County, North Carolina 27592, United States. Twumasi Duah-Mensah reported on the law enforcement action and rescue response for The News & Observer on October 23, 2026.

Volunteers with Longleaf Animal Rescue partnered with Wake County Animal Control to execute the rescue operation.
Court records confirm that the property owner, 57-year-old Sharon McDonald, was charged on October 16 with 10 counts of animal cruelty. McDonald turned herself in to authorities and was released after posting a $10,000 bail.
All 19 dogs were found severely underweight, suffering from flea infestations, and living in squalor with widespread waste throughout the residence.
Longleaf Animal Rescue took custody of 10 Chihuahuas—marking the largest single intake in the group’s history—while securing foster homes for all of them.
The dogs require extensive veterinary care, including vaccinations, spay and neuter procedures, and dental surgeries. One dog, named Chickpea, suffers from an exposed root that prevents her from eating properly and requires emergency surgery.
Longleaf Animal Rescue has raised over $5,000 to cover emergency medical expenses. Rescue representatives emphasized that all animals are currently receiving medical stabilization and foster care before any future adoption opportunities are considered.
My thoughts:
- Collaborative partnerships between local animal control and rescue organizations are vital when handling sudden, large-scale intake cases.
- Comprehensive veterinary evaluations ensure neglected animals receive necessary dental, surgical, and nutritional rehabilitation.
- Foster-based rescue networks offer crucial immediate housing for traumatized animals while permanent adoption plans are put on hold.
- Severe flea infestations and unsanitary conditions present immediate physical health hazards that require urgent medical intervention.
- Community financial contributions play an indispensable role in covering expensive veterinary treatments for rescue animals.
- Legal animal cruelty charges reinforce accountability and protect pets from severe neglect in residential settings.
