An intentionally set house fire in Aurora has left a family of five displaced and facing extensive home destruction.
The fire occurred near Montview Boulevard and Dunkirk Street in Aurora, Arapahoe County, Colorado 80011, United States. Ashley Portillo reported on the investigation for CBS Colorado on October 23, 2026.

The blaze ignited on a Saturday evening at a neighboring property around 7:30 p.m. before strong winds pushed the flames to the home of Gloria Ponce and her family. Upon noticing the reflection of flames on a sliding glass door, Ponce evacuated her husband and two-year-old child without shoes or personal belongings before calling 911. The fire ripped through the upper story of the home, leaving severe fire, smoke, and water damage throughout the entire structure where the family had lived for eight years.
Adding to the family’s ordeal, Ponce returned to the damaged property on Friday to assess belongings, only to discover that someone had broken into the compromised residence. Aurora Police Department officers responded to the scene to investigate the burglary.
The Aurora Fire Department confirmed that the initial fire was human-caused and intentionally set. The Red Cross is currently assisting the Ponce family with emergency hotel accommodations while community fundraising efforts are underway to help cover recovery expenses.
My thoughts:
- Rapid wind-driven fire spread underscores the vulnerability of adjacent residential properties during structural blazes.
- Immediate evacuation without delaying for personal belongings remains crucial for surviving fast-moving residential fires.
- Securing fire-damaged properties is essential to prevent secondary crimes such as trespassing and burglary.
- Displaced families rely heavily on immediate disaster relief organizations like the Red Cross for temporary shelter.
- Arson investigations require thorough forensic analysis to hold individuals accountable for endangering residential neighborhoods.
- Community fundraising initiatives provide vital support for families rebuilding after catastrophic property loss.
