A dog found severely injured and emaciated on a Shawano County, Wisconsin farm with nine gunshot wounds has officially been adopted into a loving home. Yahoo News and WFRV reported on the heartwarming recovery on October 15, 2026.

The dog, named Sully, was first discovered in July surviving despite critical injuries and extreme weight loss. Nathan Overholser, who was present at the farm when Sully was found, visited the pup frequently throughout his long medical recovery, forming a deep bond alongside his co-workers.

After hearing about Sully’s resilient spirit and gentle demeanor, Overholser’s wife, Emily Pease, enthusiastically agreed to bring him into their home. Upon arrival at his new residence, Sully immediately claimed a favorite spot on the couch, where his new family describes him as a true couch potato.

Now fully settling into household life, Sully spends his days playing with the family’s other dogs and greeting his owners at the door. The couple chose to keep his original name, Sully, to ensure a smooth transition into his new chapter.

My thoughts:

  • The remarkable resilience of dogs who survive extreme trauma highlights their capacity to form deep, trusting bonds with humans even after suffering severe abuse.
  • Regular visits during a shelter animal’s extended medical recovery often play a pivotal role in creating strong human-animal connections that lead to permanent adoptions.
  • Providing a comfortable, low-stress home environment allows former working or farm dogs recovering from injuries to relax and reveal their playful personalities.
