Firefighters in Bay Shore, New York, executed a unique rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon, October 7, 2026, using heavy-duty hydraulic rescue equipment to free a dog trapped under a backyard shed.

Members of the Bay Shore Fire Department responded alongside Suffolk County police officers to a home on Gardiner Drive after receiving reports that a family dog named Cody was stuck beneath the structure.
Key details of the 20-minute rescue operation include:
- Initial Rescue Attempt: Firefighters first attempted to dig a trench under the shed to create an escape path. However, the digging scared Cody, causing him to crawl farther underneath.
- Deployment of Heavy Rescue Gear: Bay Shore Fire Chief John Ippolito Jr. requested inflatable lifting bags, wooden cribbing, and Hurst hydraulic tools—commonly known as the “Jaws of Life”—from Rescue 11.
- Lifting the Structure: Emergency crews carefully raised the shed using the hydraulic tools while building up wooden cribbing to stabilize the weight and prevent collapse.
- Safe Reunion: Rescuers reached Cody within 20 minutes, successfully freeing him without any injuries reported to the dog or emergency personnel.
