A dog named Happy was severely injured on October 6, 2026, after being dragged hundreds of feet when the doors of a Phoenix light rail train shut on his leash at a North Phoenix stop near Rose Mofford Park.

The incident occurred when owner Sarah Bass dropped belongings while attempting to exit the train. As she gathered her items, Happy ran off the platform just as the doors closed, trapping his leash inside the moving vehicle.
Key details surrounding the incident include:
- Emergency Response Delays: Bass pressed the emergency button while another passenger pulled the emergency cord. Despite efforts to alert the operator, the train took time to stop and left shortly after halting.
- Safety Concerns Raised: Witnesses and Bass criticized Valley Metro’s safety features and the driver’s failure to remain at the scene of the accident.
- Community Support: Local nonprofit organization Dogs Day Out AZ paid Happy’s $3,000 veterinary bill and helped place Bass and her dog in a shelter.
“I was picturing shredded up dog and guts all over the light rail. I thought I lost my baby,” Bass recalled. She added: “Their safety features, they’re failing. What if that had been a child? What if it had been an old person?”
Happy received veterinary care for multiple injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
