A man in Berlin Township, Michigan, shot and killed his dog after it attacked and seriously injured a woman, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to the home at about 4:47 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026.

The report was that a 25-year-old woman had been severely bitten by a roommate’s dog. The dog’s owner, a 31-year-old man, was not home at the time.

Deputies learned the dog, an Akita, attacked the woman after she tried to walk near it. It bit her repeatedly.

The woman grabbed a nearby knife and stabbed the dog in an effort to stop the attack. She had wounds on her arms, back, and torso.

A short time later, the roommate returned home and found the dog outside with several stab wounds. “The owner retrieved a handgun and shot the dog, killing it,” deputies said.

The woman was taken to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital for treatment. Monroe County Animal Control arrived and took the dead dog.

Berlin Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance also assisted. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control are investigating.

My thoughts:

This is a hard story with no easy villain in what’s been reported. A woman was seriously hurt, a dog was killed, and the owner came home to both.

The report leaves out key details, like the dog’s history and what happened between the attack and the shooting. Those are likely part of what investigators are looking at.

Because the investigation is open, it’s best to stick to what deputies have confirmed. If more comes out, it may be worth a follow-up.
