Two dogs are safe after Phoenix firefighters pulled them from a burning home in the southwest part of the city on September 20, 2026. Crews were dispatched around 9:45 p.m. to an area near 53rd and Southern avenues after a house caught fire, producing heavy smoke and flames, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

While battling the blaze, firefighters found the two dogs suffering from smoke inhalation. They resuscitated and revived both animals on scene using specialized pet resuscitation devices known as “Fido bags,” the department said in a post on X. Both dogs were then transported to an animal hospital for further treatment.
Officials said no people were inside the home at the time of the fire, and there were no reports of any human injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
My thoughts: Stories like this one are a good reminder of how much specialized equipment matters on scene. A “Fido bag” isn’t something most people think about when they picture a fire truck, but it’s the difference between a dog surviving smoke inhalation and not. It also says something about how these departments train and prepare for calls that go beyond just putting out flames and getting people out safely. No injuries to the residents, two dogs given a second chance, and it happened because someone thought ahead about what a call like this might require.
