An 11 year old boy was attacked by three dogs near Wood Duck Road in Axson, Georgia on September 13, 2026, according to the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said the main attacking dog was a pit bull, the breeds of the other two dogs have not been released. The boy, identified in his mother’s public statements as Banner O’Berry, an Atco Middle School football player, was riding a four-wheeler with his best friend, also 11, when the vehicle broke down.

According to the boy’s mother, Jessica O’Berry, the two boys climbed onto the four-wheeler after the dogs approached from across an open field, but one of the dogs pulled him off by the ankle, and the other two joined the attack. His friend handed him a pair of pliers to use as a weapon while staying with him throughout the attack, throwing things at the dogs, screaming, and calling for help. The friend’s parents, who lived less than a mile away, arrived shortly after being called.
Banner sustained 17 open wounds to his legs and underwent roughly three and a half hours of surgery. His mother said she was in Utah when she received the news, and that she is grateful he made it through. She publicly thanked her son’s friend and his parents for staying and helping. Local reporting confirmed the attack and surgery; the sheriff’s office has not yet released further details on the dogs’ owners or any resulting charges.
My thoughts: This is a difficult story to sit with, and there isn’t a way to soften what happened to an 11 year old. What comes through clearly in his mother’s account is how much of the outcome came down to his friend’s choice to stay rather than run, at the same age, facing the same danger. I’m keeping this one factual rather than trying to shape it into anything more than what it is, a serious injury to a child, and a friend who didn’t leave his side.
