A Tree Fell on a Trailer During a Storm. What Rescuers Found Inside Turned Into One of Their Biggest Rescues Ever.

When severe storms tore through Merrillville, Indiana, last week, a large tree came crashing down onto a residential trailer, an accident that ended up uncovering something far bigger than storm damage. Inside were dozens of dogs living in conditions that quickly turned a routine call into one of the largest animal rescues Humane Indiana Shelter and Clinic has ever handled.

First responders initially expected to find around 20 dogs on the property. Instead, they ultimately located about 70, many of them underweight and in need of care. Merrillville police are investigating the situation as an alleged animal hoarding case.

The timing couldn’t have been more difficult for the shelter tasked with taking them in. Humane Indiana had spent the previous days in its own survival mode, losing power during the same storms and evacuating its existing animals before finally reopening its doors. Just two hours after reopening, the shelter took in 48 of the dogs from the trailer in a single wave, with the broader rescue effort ultimately connected to around 70 animals total.

Rather than being deterred by back-to-back crises, the shelter leaned into it. After sharing news of the rescue on Facebook, the surrounding community responded immediately, with dozens of volunteers showing up to bathe the dogs, provide comfort, and help however they could. The response was strong enough that the shelter had to start turning away additional volunteers simply because there wasn’t room for more hands.

Shelter staff have described the back-to-back challenges as feeling like one gut punch after another, but say the outpouring of community support has been what’s kept the organization moving forward. The dogs will remain in Humane Indiana’s care while the alleged hoarding investigation continues and until they’re medically and legally cleared for adoption.

For a group of dogs who went from a damaged trailer to a full shelter almost overnight, the road ahead still includes recovery, medical care, and eventually, new homes. But for now, thanks to a fast-moving rescue effort and a community that showed up without hesitation, they’re safe.
