At Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan, a dedicated Border Collie named Piper made waves as a vital member of the airport’s wildlife control team.

Dressed in specialized gear, including protective ski goggles and noise-canceling earmuffs, Piper’s primary mission was to chase birds and wildlife away from the active runways to ensure the safety of arriving and departing aircraft.

Working alongside his handler, Brian Edwards, Piper became an internet sensation for his striking, professional appearance and fearless attitude on the tarmac. Border Collies are naturally driven to herd, making Piper perfectly suited for patrolling the expansive concrete runways, even during harsh winter blizzards.

Beyond keeping airplanes safe from potentially catastrophic bird strikes, Piper brought immense joy to the airport staff and community. His iconic look, featuring high-visibility vests and custom eye protection to shield his eyes from dust, debris, and snow glare, made him a true canine hero of aviation safety.
